Swindon Science Café: Unearthing the critical role of healthy soil with Dr David O’Connor

Join us on Tuesday 3 December (7-9 pm) for a lively informal evening of discovery and discussion with Dr David O’Connor, Associate Professor of Sustainable Land Management.

At this Science Café, we will be unearthing the critical role of healthy soil! The ground beneath our feet is far more than just dirt – it serves as a foundation for life itself.

We’ll discuss soil pollution as a challenge for public health and food security, as well as examine whether soil carbon sequestration could be the solution to combating climate change.

Dr O’Connor is a lecturer in sustainable land management at the Royal Agricultural University, UK. David’s research investigates pollution issues relating to brownfield development as well as agricultural land degradation. His principle is that land requires careful stewardship in order to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. David’s research in this subject has led to 49 SCI articles in journals including Nature, Science, Nature Sustainability, Nature Reviews: Earth & Environment. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for Soil Use and Management, and as an editorial board member for the Journal of Hazardous Materials and Science of the Total Environment.

Register your interest for an evening with Dr O’Connor.

No scientific knowledge is needed to take part. A selection of light refreshments will be available in return for a donation on the night, or you are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks with you.
